Here is a list of frequently asked questions. If you don't find what you are looking for please contact me.
Do you sell computers?
No. If you need a new computer, I can evaluate your needs and offer advise on what to purchase. I will always let you know if I think it is in your best interest to replace your computer, rather than to update it. If you need a part, you can purchase it yourself, or I can get it for you at cost.
Do you offer flat rates for virus elimination?
I don’t. It is impossible to predict at the outset how difficult it will be to decontaminate an infected computer and put it back in operating condition. Sometimes, scanning your computer with the appropriate utilities will be enough. Some malicious software infections, such as rootkits, can be difficult to identify and remove, and may even may require a reinstall of the OS.
Can I fix an infection myself?
There are a number of remedies available, if you want to try to clean up your computer. Visit my “Tips and tricks” page for some suggestions and links. Some nasty infections, like rootkits, are very good at hiding, and running malware elimination tools will likely not eliminate them. Sometimes the only way to eliminate these infections is to reinstall windows on a clean hard drive.
How can I tell if my computer is infected?
Computer infections can manifest themselves in many ways; poor performance, browsers being redirected, crashes, and other symptoms. I provide more information on my “Tips and tricks” page.
Do you support MACs?
Yes.
Is it true MACs don’t get infected?
No.
What operating systems do you support?
Mac OS X, Windows ( all versions including the not yet released 8 ), Linux.
Do you do hardware repairs?
It depends on the repair needed, the type of computer, and the status of the warranty. Call me with your specific problem, and I can give you more information.
Do you do hardware repairs and upgrades on MACS?
For any hardware problems or upgrades to MACS, I suggest you contact a MAC authorized service center, as long as your computer is under warranty.
Can you recover data from my crashed hard drive?
As long as the hard drive spins, I can probably recover your data. If you have a mechanical failure, such as a head crash or defective head, then I will have to refer you elsewhere. Fixing and recovering mechanically defective hard drives is a very expensive process which can only be done in a “clean room”; so please keep your computer files backed up. If you suspect your hard drive is failing, shut the computer down and call me.
